Display issues in Windows 10 guest after returning from sleep mode in Ubuntu 18.10 host
January 17, 2019, 8:09 pm
Hello,
This display bug is hard to replicate, but I'm running a Windows 10 guest with Ubuntu 18.10 host. After I return the laptop from sleep mode a couple of issues will often occur.
First, the gnome lock screen doesn't activate and I am free to continue using both the guest and host system without my password - this almost always happens when the virtual machine is in full screen mode.
Secondly, Windows itself will produce a whirlwind of display issues including missing borders around the windows, missing buttons in programs, etc. It looks like the graphics driver is not properly redrawing everything. I either have to manually restart Windows Explorer or restart Windows completely. Here is a screenshot of one of the problems (but sometimes it looks worse with tearing and missing icons):
Here's another screenshot that looks worse with the windows settings app open after sleep (without Windows being full screen):
My system specs are:
- Workstation Player 15.0.2 build-10952284
- Ubuntu 18.10 (Gnome 3.30.1, stock settings from the install)
- Kernel 4.18.0-13-generic
- Using X (Wayland doesn't seem to work with VMware)
- Dell Latitude 5591 with i7 8850H and Nvidia GeForce MX 130 graphics
- 16 GB RAM
- 1080p touchscreen display
- Windows 10 is using 1809 and has 2 CPU cores, 4 GB RAM, and 1 GB of graphics with 3D acceleration enabled.
Thanks,
Ian
ignore missing virtual disk
January 21, 2019, 4:17 am
i would need VMware Player to ignore a missing virtual disk. The virtual disk is for data, it resides on a removeable device and I need it rarely. I would prefer to have it always configured, and optionally present.
(First exact reason and exact problem: it is a disk and not a shared folder because Microsoft SQL Server requires backup data, to restore, to be on a local disk, not on a network disk or network location. Key point is BACKUP DATA, on RESTORE. And I would then also put there BACKUP DATA, on BACKUP occasion. My data is large enough that it warrants the feature, that is storing on a host-removeable disk.)
(Second, additional road block is that I cannot attach this specific 7200rpm in an external USB3 enclosure to the VM. VMware Workstation Player does not handle connection of this USB3 enclosure as a removeable device to the VM. )
(Third road block: I do have even two different 7200 rpm+USB3 enclosures and both of them do not connect to the VM. Other, branded external, 5400rpm, USB3 disks do connect as removeable devices to the VM in VMware Player, But then I would lose using this 7200rpm/USB3 device that I do have. )
This is how I attempted to solve. VMware Player is version 15.0.2. Perhaps there are other auto-detecting solutions.
This was already asked in 2013 by and didn't get a solution. See Ignore missing virtual disk and boot anyway?
Thank you
Can guest see device if device not recognised properly in host?
January 23, 2019, 6:42 am
It seems that the driver for a hardware device I have does not work on Windows 10 (yellow triangle beside the device in Device Manager). It works on Windows 7 though.
I though I could get it running by using a Win7 guest on Win10 host using VMware Player.
But it doesnt appear in the list of Removable Devices.
Am I right in thinking if the host OS cant get the driver to work properly, the guest will not be able to see the device either, and so there is no point it trying the above?
EFI Shell command -b option causes Firmware Crash
February 1, 2019, 3:04 am
Hi,
I am using VMWare Player 14 on Windows 7 64 Host OS. I have a shell.efi application (64 bit) downloaded from this link
It's from Intel's Tianocore EDK II project. I have created a Windows 7 64 Guest OS in UEFI mode.
When I run Shell.efi & enter a shell command followed by -b option to pause at page, the VMware Firmware Crashes.
The issue does not exist with the VMware's own built-in shell.
A command like
Help
works fine but the moment I pass
Help -b
the firmware crashes at the first page break.
Basically any applicable shell command that supports -b option, when invoked with -b causes VMware to crash.
Does anyone have any idea what could the fix here?
There's no issue on a real UEFI Hardware. On my real hardware 'help -b' runs just fine as expected.
Thanks.

Unable to resize guest window size in Windows 10
February 2, 2019, 10:11 pm
I am using VMware Workstation 15 Player (free edition), and have Ubuntu 18 64 bit as a guest, on Windows 10 machine.
It runs fine, but for some reason, the guest window size is fixed. When I drag the bottom corner to increase the size, and it just "snaps back" to the default size.
I'm sure I ran it a couple of months ago, and I could resize to whatever size I wanted without issue.
Any idea how to resolve the issue?
Thanks so much,
Lee
Memory Problem
February 6, 2019, 11:17 pm
Hello,
I'm using Workstation Player 15.0.2 on a Win7 SP1 PC.
Host PC has 24 GB Ram.
I created a guest and reserved 16 GB memory for it. (Guest is also Win7 SP1)
When i open an application on guest, memory increases to its required value to work. (It's 3 - 5 GB physical Ram usage i see on the task manager)
The problem is, it wont decrease if i close all running applications on the guest. (Host is not running any other applications from start to end.)
I see 3 GB memory usage on guest, when the host uses 16 GB for VmWare. It decrease only when i stop vmware.
I didnt understand why memory is not adjusting itself?
Thanks for your help.
VMware Player - Windows Guest Machine completely overloaded with over 2gb of memory
February 7, 2019, 6:52 am
Hello Community,
I'm sorry for my english, but I need your help.
My host System is Linux Mint 19.1 and I use VMware Player in the current version. I want to install Windows 7. I use the default Settings (2gb memory, 2 Cores). The machine is very fast and all is normal. But if I give the virtual machine more than 2gb memory, the machine is completely overloadet. The system starts in more than 5 minutes. And when I catch the mouse in the machine the machine freezes more or less. The mouse can no longer be controlled or decoupled out of the machine. The system clock works normaly and the Host system is normal with the programs they run in the background. Just the Windows 7 virtual machine is "broken". When I make a hard shutdown and change the settings on only 2gb memory the system is normal and fast. No matter if I change the settings between 3gb or 14gb of memory - the system is not useable. I tried it with Windows 10, but it gave me the same result. Once again: with exactly 2gb of memory it have the perfect performance.
I hope you can read what I mean and have a solution for me. If I forgot something, just let me know. Thank you very much in advance. You are my last hope

- MSI 970 Gaming Mainboard

Windows 2000 on VMWare Player
February 7, 2019, 7:05 am
Hello dear Users,
im new in this Forum, also im German and my English isnt pretty well. Please Sorry me for all the wrong sentences :=)
My Problem is following:
I have a Windows 2000 Professional Workstation here which i want to Virtualize, because the Computer-Hardware is slowly gonna die and the whole System is just usable for one Task.
The Task is Simple: The Device is used to Dictate letters.
There is a USB Device connected to the Computer, which records and Reproduces the Sound and gives it to a Programm on the System to write down the Sentences automatically.
My Problem is, that i could Virtualize the Windows 2000 without any Problems, it runs very smoothly and with VMWare Tools is it better than on the Workstation, i can Scroll and click in the machine with the dictating device, but i cant use the buttons for Record, pause, stop or rewind.
The Device is aknowledged by Windows 10 as a HID as i can see, but i think there are no Drivers for Windows 10 from Philipps (The Device is a Speechmike Pro 6274).
So i need Help from the Community now, to Passthrough the Device complete to the Virtual Machine.
I Think it would Work then, because it worked almost 20 Years on the Old System

dGPU acceleration of VM
February 10, 2019, 3:06 pm
Hi all, I was wondering if the VM can be accelerated by using the discrete GPU in my surface book 2. The whole system seems to use the integrated intel GPU even after changing to my nvidia gpu on the nvidia control panel.

[15.0.2] Promts License screen on every start and list of created VMs are always empty
February 20, 2019, 1:28 am
The problems: on every start of VMware Workstation Player it prompts for License screen and after agree it the list of created VMs from last starts are always empty. I always have to open and locate the .vmx to add it to the list. But on next start the list empty again.
Also disable the "Show Hints" never got saved.
And on every GUI action the GUI freezes short.
If i read the logs, I often see it couldn't load the config files. So i assume it never could write the config files. And the some config files at the time of installation date has last edited date like the time of the installation date.
I'm using Win10Pro(1809) linked to a corporate domain.

Linux Host, Windows 10 Guest, Altium Designer "Directx 10 not supported" error
February 21, 2019, 12:10 pm
I'm running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS on an Intel NUC8i7BEH, which has the "Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655" GPU.
According to Intel, this GPU hardware supports Direct3D 2015, 11.2, 11.1, 9, and 10, as well as OpenGL 4.5 .
I'm running VMWare workstation 15 Player, and a Windows 10 Home guest (10.0 build 17134).
I'm trying to run Altium Designer 18, which requires DirectX 10 for correct operation.
When I open a view in Altium that requires DirectX, I get an Altium "DirectX 10 is not supported" error dialog and I don't see the expected display.
I have "enable 3D acceleration" turned on in my settings; originally that didn't work so I changed my .vmx file (per several posts in the Forum) to include:
mks.enable3d = "TRUE"
mks.gl.allowBlacklistedDrivers = "TRUE"
mks.enableDX11Renderer = "FALSE"
mks.enableGLRenderer = "TRUE"
When I run dxdiag in my Windows guest, it says "DirectX Version: DirectX 12", "no problems found", "Direct3D Acceleration: Enabled".
What can I do to fix this problem?
Thanks!
Shared folders not appearing on guest VM
February 22, 2019, 1:55 am
I just created a new VM, configured two shared folders, but I cannot find them on the guest.
I'm not really expert on VMs so it may be an error of configuration or something missing...
I'm using VMware Workstation 15 Player and on both host and guest is running Win 10 PRO.
Sharing folder is configured as "always enabled" and "Map as network drive in Windows guest" is flagged.
Any suggestion?
