Posting on Tumblr: Replying to Comments and Responding to Asks
Replies in Tumblr
Tumblr's comment system is much different that any other platform out there. Unlike most blogs, commenting isn't very intuitive. Tumblr allows what they call "replies" – if the blog admin allows them – once a follower has been following a blog for more than two weeks. I assume this was implemented to cut down on trolling or to make it easier to regulate discussion.
You can turn replies on/off in the settings menu (the little gear at the top of the page).
You can reply to a post when you see the text bubble outline in your dashboard.
We haven't received many replies. Here's an example of one.
This reply is a few weeks old, so the notification doesn't show up anymore in the dashboard or on the blog view at tumblr.com/blog/brooklyncollegeadmissions. Here's how you'd answer a reply:
Once you click on "manually," a text post will pop up that looks like this:
So here's what I published when I saw the previous reply:
(Note: I have installed the XKit extension to allow replies. This is not a native function of Tumblr.)
Responding to asks
Just earlier this week, the extension I was using that allowed me to add asks in the native format to the queue stopped working. So we'll need to come up with a new format for responding to these.
In theory you could respond to all of them in one blast, but this looks very unprofessional. For one, it clogs the dash of your followers, who probably don't want to see five posts in a row from Brooklyn College. Also, most users aren't on Tumblr during the nine-to-five working day. I strongly suggest having the majority of content queued and posted from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. More on the queue later …
So here's the traditional way to respond to asks:
When you post them, they look like this:
Whenever responding to questions, I answer it and link to the answer on the Web if at all possible. The most obvious reason for doing this is because it gives credibility to your answer and allows the asker and the other people following the blog to able to read more about the answer. The other reason for doing this is because having links to reputable Web sites is for search engine optimization reasons. Google will rank the blog higher if content is regularly updated and sourced by other high-ranking sites.
Before I found the extension to queue asks, I took a screen shot of the question, uploaded as a photo and responded to it that way. I think this is how you should proceed.
On the Mac, you make a screen shot by hitting Command+Shift+3 for a full screen and Command+Shift+4 to get crosshairs to make a clipping of the post. This is what I would do (and what I have been doing for this blog).
Here's an old ask post I did this way.
